Spam

I got spammed.

Im not talking about the type of spam where you get free offers to Russian Teen Brides or Dirt Cheap Laptops either.

My comments on this very blog were targetted.
Something was programmed to leave several repetative comments on several of my posts, the comments contained a little link that looked like >>, when clicked this link took you to a very poor search engine.

I have since deleted all of these.
I have also added some measures to make sure it doesnt happen again.
From now on all comments will be subject to my approval before being published, and require a random word to be entered, which means that a human has to type the message and not a program.

I will not reject any comment wether it be complimentary or criticism, only those that appear to be spam.

It would be really cool to try and gauge if anybody is actually reading my drivel so feel free to leave comments and maybe hit my profile (boring!) so I can see how many hits its had.

Letter to Geelong Football Club

Sent to Players@gfc.com.au on Saturday 20/5/2006 9:29pm

Congratulations Cats you’ve finally done it.
After 27 years of suffering, 4 grand final losses, several preliminary and semi final losses, you have finally made me sick.
I feel sick right to the pit of my stomache.
For the first time I brought a membership last year, it was only a cheap interstate one, but I wanted to contribute and be apart of the club that I have loved so dearly, the club I have cheered and the club I have cried for. Last year I was proud to be a member of a club I thought had a future.
Yes I may not have been a paid up member for 27 years but that doesn’t mean I haven’t ridden the highs and lows like any other. I have supported the club through buying merchandise all my life.

This year I received my renewal and I was a bit short of cash at the time so I sat it aside and thought ill pay that when I can, I still wanted to be apart of the club.
After week 2 everything was swell and if I remember correctly we sat atop the AFL ladder.
After week 6 and we were 2-4 I thought ill just wait and see what happens, I don’t know if you deserve my money.
It is now ½ time against Collingwood in round 8, and I just want you to know the membership renewal is in 50 pieces on my kitchen floor and heading for a bin sometime soon,

I have stuck with the club through thick and thin for 27 years and this is how you repay me?
Thanks a bloody lot.

I just cancelled my plans to travel from Tasmania to skilled stadium during round 21, you clearly are not prepared to show some heart and put in, so im not prepared to come down and leave dejected.

About time you sacked Bomber Thompson he is clearly Soft and Not suitable/capable to coach our team into the future
We have a very talented list yet we are getting pumped every week..……….why?

Regards Sam Geeves

The Geelong website also has an email address if you wish to do volunteer work, I couldnt help myself.

sent 9:39pm saturday 20/05/2006

I'd like to volunteer as CLUB COACH.

Surely I couldn’t do any worse than Bomber Thompson? And look at the money you would save on his overpaid arse.

My previous experience includes, an undefeated season on AFL live on the Playstation 2 and an in depth knowledge of Kevin Sheedy Coach 2002 on PC.

My coaching style involves me staying home, watching the game on fox footy, drinking some beers and coaching via phone link.

It would appear by the players performances of late that this is the preferred style of Mr Thompson as well.

I am available for interview,
Looking forward to hearing from you

Greatest Australian Songs

Bert Newton's 20 to 1 this week featured the "Top 20 songs to make there mark on Australia".

Its a topic that had a lot of interest to me, And it got me thinking maybe I too should compile a list of my favourite songs by Australian artists,

Heres Berts list.

20 Johnny Okeefe - Shout
19 John Farnham - Your the voice
18 Natalie Imbruglia - Torn
17 Olivia Newton John - Honestly love you
16 Little River Band - Help is on the way

5 INXS - Never tear us apart
4 Peter Allen - Still call australia home
3 Daddy Cool - Eagle Rock

Special Mentions were made to the following songs,
Gangajang - Sounds of then
John Williamson - True Blue
Savage Garden - Moon and back
Jimmy Barnes - Working Class man
Slim Dusty - A Pub With No Beer.

I might not necessarily agree with some of Berts list, but as far as songs that had effect and success on Australia its pretty fair, I think John Farnham probably deserves better than 19 though.
It wasnt until I sat down and thought about putting one togethor that I realised exactly how hard it would be. The list could be 1000 long if I listed every song of some artists. So to make it interesting there are plenty of songs included I dont like however have been included, to make the list not just my personal taste.
I dont have the benefit of understanding how big some of the songs in the 60's and 70's were which also means they may rate lower than in some of your own opinions.

Chequebook Journalism

The old man recently submitted this to "letters to the editor" of the Mercury.

"I should have seen it coming. Sometimes even people with my cynical take on life can get swept up in the emotion of the moment and let their guard down and Tuesday the ninth of May was one of those occasions. The joy on the faces of the miners and their loved ones. The overwhelming heroics of the rescuers. The unbounded courage and compassion displayed by the people of Beaconsfield. The poignant and heart wrenching sadness etched on the faces of mourners. The centre piece of these human attributes was the dignity portrayed by all – the Mayor, the mine manager, the reporters and T.V.presenters and the people of Beaconsfield. Then the circus came to town and dignity tumbled head first down the Beaconsfield pit. With chequebook firmly in hand the only thing missing from Eddie McGuires face was the red nose"

Dad summed it up perfectly for me, I couldnt have felt sicker when i first saw Eddie perched at the bar of the Club Hotel in Beaconsfield shouting a round, to quote Eddie "this rounds on Channel Nine and Collingwood" makes you wonder what chequebook he used to pay for that round.

If i had been the publican i would have turfed him out, no way i would allow Collingwood purchased alcohol to be consumed in my bar.

I hate Collingwood and Eddie Mcguire.

Sirens, Rules and Equity

Sunday 30 April York Park Launceston Tasmania.
Scene of the biggest mess in AFL History.

Umpire Mathew Nichols asks if his arse is on fire?
5 Fremantle players heard the siren why didnt umpire Nicholls?
If 5 people are waving there arms in your face, screaming and jumping up and down in front of you would you wave them aside and bounce the ball or stop to find out whats going on?

For those of you who have been living in a cave click the link for the article thanks to afl.com.au click here

The AFL today (03/05/2006) awarded the 4 points to Fremantle as they were in front when the siren sounded although the AFL's rules state that the game is over when the umpire acknowledges the siren by putting his arm in the air and blowing his whistle.

So the AFL has made a decision that they have based on what is morally correct, there decision is based to reflect equity and fairness, and whilst i do not disagree with these reasons being used to make the decision what ever happened to playing by the rules? Is the AFL now going to change the rules?

The AFL in my mind is setting a dangerous precedent, lets say next week Anthony Rocca gets flattened in the goal square with 30 seconds left, everybody knows the free is there yet the umpire misses it, does Eddie now have the ability to challenge the games outcome and say that all things being equal and fair that a free should have been awarded resulting in a certain goal? Morally Collingwood deserves the game, everything being fair and equal they deserve to win but under the rules it gives the umpire freedom to make his own decision, Under the rules the game at York Park should have been declared a draw.

The AFL has not taken into account the fact that people who placed money on this game may now miss out on thousands of dollars rightfully owed to them. I heard of one punter who will not get $32000 he WON FAIRLY on a footyquad bet from the TAB, he needed Fremantle to win by 1-12 points, the AFL has now said this was the case but where is his fairness and equity? Morally he should be paid but the TAB have stuck to there RULES despite other agencies cutting there losses and paying both tickets.

Is the AFL going to pay this man his deserved winnings seeing as though they have said they take full responsibility for what happened. If I was that man I would sue both the TAB and the AFL, if not for my winnings but for the stress and emotional pain.

Rules for one, Morals for another, not very EQUAL is it?
